Background of the Study
Digital libraries have become essential in the modern educational landscape, providing students, researchers, and faculty with access to a vast repository of academic materials. Federal Polytechnic, Idah, located in Idah LGA, Kogi State, operates a digital library that aims to support learning, teaching, and research activities. However, the challenge lies in efficiently retrieving relevant information from the vast digital content stored within the library. Information Retrieval (IR) algorithms are fundamental in enhancing the search functionality within digital libraries. These algorithms help in indexing, ranking, and retrieving relevant documents based on user queries. By implementing advanced IR techniques, such as vector space models, semantic search, and natural language processing, the efficiency and accuracy of the library’s search system can be significantly improved. This study will explore the application of these algorithms to enhance the performance of the digital library at Federal Polytechnic, Idah.
Statement of the Problem
The digital library at Federal Polytechnic, Idah, currently faces challenges related to the retrieval of relevant academic resources. Despite having a large collection of digital content, the library’s search functionality lacks precision, often returning irrelevant or low-quality results. Users struggle to find relevant resources efficiently, which limits the library’s effectiveness as a tool for research and learning.
